GDP flash estimate: recession slowed down in Q2

According to Statistics Estonia's preliminary estimate, the decline in the gross domestic product (GDP) slowed down in the second quarter of 2024. GDP fell by approximately 1.7% compared with the second quarter of 2023.

Young workers are turning away from the information and communication sector

Statistics Estonia's short-term labour market statistics show that over the past year and a half, there have been fewer young people aged 20–29 working in both the broader information and communication sector and the more specific field of computer programming. While in previous years the field of computer programming was growing mainly because of young people, in the past year their numbers have fallen.

Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before

According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

The number of foreign students has increased by nearly 50% in five years

According to Statistics Estonia, at the beginning of the academic year of 2010/2011, 69,113 students were enrolled in higher education in Estonia, 128 students more than in the previous year. 1,282 foreign students from 62 countries are studying in Estonian universities. The number of foreign students has increased by 388 students compared to 2005.

In January imports grew faster than exports

According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2011 compared to the same month of the previous year, exports of goods grew by 57% and imports by 66% at current prices. The growth in imports was mainly influenced by the arrivals of machinery and equipment as well as transport equipment. Among partner countries Sweden ranked the first in both exports and imports.
