Short-term labour market statistics
Statistics Estonia publishes short-term labour market statistics since November 2022. Interactive charts give an overview of the labour market in Estonia based on the data of the employment register. They show changes in the number of employment relationships: how many were started, suspended or terminated. There is also a time series of the changes in these indicators. The number of employment relationships is based on entries in the employment register, meaning that people with several jobs are represented several times in the dataset.

Economic activity
The chart shows the relative percentage change in the number of employment relationships compared with the end of the first month of the year by economic activity of the enterprise or organisation. The indicator shows whether the number of people engaged in a given economic activity has increased (positive ratio), decreased (negative ratio) or has not changed compared with the beginning of the year (zero ratio). The indicator is calculated as follows:
(number of employment relationships on the last day of the given month – number of employment relationships on the last day of January) / number of employment relationships on the last day of January * 100%
The following chart illustrates the change in the number of employment relationships compared with the same month of 2021. The change in the number of employment relationships is shown in absolute terms on the left-hand chart and as relative change on the right-hand chart. Positive figures indicate a higher number of employment relationships in 2022 compared to 2021.

The chart gives an overview of employment trends in 2022 in enterprises and organisations of different sizes. It shows the relative change in the number or employment relationships by number of employees in the enterprise.
Methodology
Data for short-term labour market statistics are obtained from the employment register of the Tax and Customs Board and from Statistics Estonia’s business register for statistical purposes. The dataset does not include the employees of security authorities.
The data are entry-based (entries of employment relationships), not person-based. This means that a person who has several jobs appears in the data with several entries.
The indicators displayed on the charts have the following meanings:
- new employment relationships – started during the given month;
- terminated employment relationships – terminated during the given month;
- suspended employment relationships – suspended during the given month;
- number of employment relationships – number of employment relationships on the last day of the given month.
