GDP flash estimate: recession slowed down in Q2

According to Statistics Estonia's preliminary estimate, the decline in the gross domestic product (GDP) slowed down in the second quarter of 2024. GDP fell by approximately 1.7% compared with the second quarter of 2023.

Young workers are turning away from the information and communication sector

Statistics Estonia's short-term labour market statistics show that over the past year and a half, there have been fewer young people aged 20–29 working in both the broader information and communication sector and the more specific field of computer programming. While in previous years the field of computer programming was growing mainly because of young people, in the past year their numbers have fallen.

Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before

According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

The number of tourists in accommodation establishments increased

According to Statistics Estonia, during the ten months of 2011, 2.34 million domestic and foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments of Estonia or the same amount as in 2007 as total. The number of tourists also increased compared to the same period of the previous year.

Stable economic growth continued also in the 3rd quarter

According to the second estimates of Statistics Estonia, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Estonia increased by 8.5% in the 3rd quarter of 2011 compared to the same quarter of the previous year. During the three quarters this year economic the growth has been stably robust.

The journal Akadeemia erects a monument to the 7 billion people on Earth

Today, on 9 December, at 15:00, the journal Akadeemia will present its latest issue at club Atlantis in Tartu. The launch of the issue, which is dedicated to the coming population census, will begin on the bank of the River Emajõgi where, just for one evening, the monument celebrating the birth of Tartu’s one hundred thousandth citizen will be turned into a monument to the seven billion people of the Earth.

The growth in business sector is slowing down

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2011, the net sales, costs and total profit of the business sector increased compared to the previous quarter as well as to the same quarter of the previous year. At the same time the continually improving comparison basis turns the growth rate slower.

The slowdown in the growth of industrial production continued in October

According to Statistics Estonia, in October 2011, the production of industrial enterprises grew 2% compared to the same month of the previous year. The annual growth of industrial production was smaller than in the previous month. The slowdown of the growth was most of all influenced by the production of electronic products and energy.

Statistics Estonia launched the census publicity campaign called “Everyone counts!”

Today, on 1 December, Statistics Estonia launched a publicity campaign to raise awareness among the Estonian population of the 2011 Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011), set to begin on 31 December. The people of Estonia will be given information about participation in the census through television and radio as well as through out-of-home advertising and direct mail.

The expenditures on R&D were raised by investments in the oil industry

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2010 the ratio of research and development (R&D) expenditures to the gross domestic product reached a novel level – 1.63%, a year earlier the respective indicator was 1.43%. The improved result was significantly influenced by investments in the technological development made in the oil industry.

Retail sales grew also in October

According to Statistics Estonia, in October 2011 compared to October of the previous year the retail sales of goods of retail trade enterprises increased 5% at constant prices. Since February compared to the same month of the previous year, the retail sales have shown a stable growth.
