Young workers are turning away from the information and communication sector

Statistics Estonia's short-term labour market statistics show that over the past year and a half, there have been fewer young people aged 20–29 working in both the broader information and communication sector and the more specific field of computer programming. While in previous years the field of computer programming was growing mainly because of young people, in the past year their numbers have fallen.

Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before

According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

Industrial production in August was smaller than a year ago

According to Statistics Estonia, in August 2012, the production of industrial enterprises decreased by 3% compared to August of the previous year. The decline in the production was most of all influenced by the manufacturing of electronic and metal products.

Stable growth in retail sales continued also in August

According to Statistics Estonia, in August 2012 compared to August of the previous year, the retail sales of goods of retail trade enterprises increased 7% at constant prices. The retail sales have shown a stable seven percent growth for the third month in succession compared to the same month of the previous year.

According to Statistics Estonia, by 15 September, 80% of the sown area of cereals, 41% of the sown area of rape and turnip rape, and 44% of the area under potatoes had been harvested in Estonia.

Central Government budget balance improved

According to revised data of Statistics Estonia, in 2011 the Estonian general government sector surplus was 1.1% and gross debt level was 6.1% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The central government budget reached the surplus again after three successive years of deficit.

PHC 2011: people of 192 ethnic nationalities live in Estonia

According to Statistics Estonia, there are permanent residents of 192 ethnic nationalities in Estonia, based on the preliminary results of the 2011 Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011). The biggest ethnic groups are Estonians, Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians and Finns.
