Young workers are turning away from the information and communication sector

Statistics Estonia's short-term labour market statistics show that over the past year and a half, there have been fewer young people aged 20–29 working in both the broader information and communication sector and the more specific field of computer programming. While in previous years the field of computer programming was growing mainly because of young people, in the past year their numbers have fallen.

Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before

According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

In October the decrease in retail sales continued

According to Statistics Estonia, in October 2009 compared to October of the previous year the retail sales of goods of retail trade enterprises decreased 17% at constant prices. Since July the decrease in retail sales has been relatively stable compared to the same month of the previous year.

The decrease in industrial production slowed down a little

According to Statistics Estonia, in October 2009 compared to October of the previous year, the production of industrial enterprises decreased 21%. In the earlier months of this year, the decrease remained within 30% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The construction market in the stable decline

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2009 compared to the same period of the previous year, the total production of Estonian construction enterprises decreased 29%. In the 1st quarter of the present year the production was 31% and in the 2nd quarter 28% smaller than a year ago.

The decrease of the average monthly gross wages and salaries continued

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2009, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were 11,770 kroons and the hourly gross wages and salaries were 71.76 kroons. Compared to the 3rd quarter of the previous year, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were by 5.9% lower and the average hourly gross wages and salaries were by 5.8% lower. The average monthly gross wages and salaries has been decreasing for three quarters running compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

102,000 persons are unemployed

According to Statistics Estonia, the unemployment rate rose to 14.6% in the 3rd quarter of the current year and the number of the unemployed was the largest during the period after the restoration of independence in Estonia. The positive change on the labour market was that the decrease of the employment stopped.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2009, 6,350 purchase-sale transactions of real estate were carried out. Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the decrease in the number of transactions slowed down.

In September imports of goods was the biggest of this year

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in September 2009 exports of goods from Estonia amounted to 9.3 billion kroons at current prices and imports to Estonia made up 10.1 billion kroons. This year imports exceeded the level of 10 billion kroons for the first time.
