HICP flash estimate: prices down by 0.5% in November

According to the preliminary estimate of Statistics Estonia, in November 2025, the harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP), which includes the expenditures of tourists, decreased by 0.5% compared with October. Compared with November last year, the HICP rose by 4.7%. This is a flash estimate, which will be refined once more detailed data on November prices are received.

The turnover of the business sector increased in the 3rd quarter

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2019, enterprises sold goods and services for 16.4 billion euros, which was 5% more than in the same period the year before.

Average wages and salaries were highest in information and communication

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2019, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were 1,397 euros. Year on year, wages and salaries increased by 8.2%. The average hourly gross wages and salaries were 8.01 euros, which is 7% more than in the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Construction volumes decreased after three and a half years of growth

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2019, the total production of Estonian construction enterprises in Estonia and abroad decreased by 1% year on year. Similarly to the first half of the year, construction volume increased in foreign countries but decreased in Estonia.

Statistical Council gave a recommendation on the organisation of the register-based census

The Statistical Council, formed by the order of the Government of the Republic, convened on 26 November. At the meeting, the results of the second trial census of the population and housing census were presented. The Statistical Council supports the decision of Statistics Estonia to combine the register-based census with sample surveys.

Average gross hourly earnings continue to increase

According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2018, managers had the highest gross hourly earnings, while elementary occupations workers had the lowest.

Producer price index affected the most by wood manufacturing

According to Statistics Estonia, in October, the producer price index of industrial output fell by 0.4% compared to September and by 1.7% compared to October 2018.

Lowest unemployment rate of the century in the 3rd quarter

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter, the unemployment rate was 3.9%, the labour force participation rate was 71.9% and the employment rate was 69%. The estimated number of employed persons was 677,300, which is 10,700 more than in the same quarter of the previous year. The number of long-term unemployed also declined.

Exports continued to decrease in September

According to Statistics Estonia, in September 2019, compared to September 2018, the exports of goods decreased by 3% and imports increased by 3%. In the third quarter, exports decreased by 2%, having increased in the first two quarters.

In October, food had the greatest impact on the consumer price index

According to Statistics Estonia, the change of the consumer price index in October 2019 was –0.1% compared to September 2019 and 1.6% compared to October of the previous year.

In September, more tourists stayed in accommodation establishments than a year ago

According to Statistics Estonia, in September, 295,000 tourists stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments, where they spent more than 544,000 nights. 64% of the tourists were foreign tourists and 36% were domestic tourists.

Registration for the European Statistics Competition is now open

The European Statistics Competition 2020, organised by the European statistical office Eurostat, takes place in 17 countries. Basic school, secondary school and vocational school students are invited to participate. The best teams in Estonia are awarded and will have the opportunity to participate in the international phase of the competition.

Industrial production in September was smaller than last year

According to Statistics Estonia, in September 2019, the production of industrial enterprises decreased by 5% compared to September 2018. Production decreased in manufacturing as well as in energy and mining.
