Organic farming area and number of organic livestock decreased last year

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2023, the organic farming area in Estonia was 225,300 hectares, representing 22.8% of total utilised agricultural area. 92% of the organic farming area was fully converted and the rest was under conversion. Compared with 2022, the organic farming area decreased by 2.5%, and 78 organic producers ceased activities.

In September, production decreased significantly in the electronics industry

According to Statistics Estonia, in September 2023, the total production of industrial enterprises decreased by 12.5% at constant prices compared with the corresponding month of 2022. Output fell in two sectors: by 37.6% in electricity production and by 10.9% in manufacturing. In mining, output remained almost at the same level, as the decrease was just 0.3% year on year.

GDP flash estimate: economy contracted by 2.5% in Q3

According to Statistics Estonia's preliminary estimate, gross domestic product (GDP) continued to decline in the third quarter of 2023. Robert Müürsepp, team lead of national accounts at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared with the third quarter of 2022, GDP fell by around 2.5%.

Producer price index of industrial output fell by 2.5% year on year

The producer price index of industrial output, which expresses changes in the producer prices of industrial goods manufactured in Estonia for the domestic market and for export, increased by 0.7% in September 2023 compared with August and decreased by 2.5% compared with September last year.

Foreign trade declined by a fifth in August

According to Statistics Estonia, in August, Estonia’s exports of goods amounted to 1.5 billion and imports to 1.8 billion euros. Compared with the same month in 2022, exports of goods decreased by 22% and imports by 19% at current prices. The trade deficit in in August was 293 million euros, which is 7 million euros less than a year earlier.

Peak tourism season in 2023 was still below pre-crisis levels

According to Statistics Estonia, 1.25 million tourists stayed in accommodation establishments in the three summer months – June, July, August – of 2023, up by 1% from a year earlier but down by 12% from the summer of 2019.
