Young workers are turning away from the information and communication sector
Statistics Estonia's short-term labour market statistics show that over the past year and a half, there have been fewer young people aged 20–29 working in both the broader information and communication sector and the more specific field of computer programming. While in previous years the field of computer programming was growing mainly because of young people, in the past year their numbers have fallen.

Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before
According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

Industrial producer price index rose by nearly 25% year on year
In December 2021, the producer price index of industrial output, which expresses changes in the producer prices of industrial goods manufactured in Estonia for the domestic market and for export, increased by 24.7% compared to December 2020 and by 5.3% compared to November 2021.

The population of Estonia decreased, mainly due to the high number of deaths
According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, on 1 January 2022, the population of Estonia was 1,328,439, which is 1,629 persons less than at the same time a year ago. In 2021, there were 13,138 births and 18,445 deaths in Estonia. Based on the data on registered migration, 12,280 persons immigrated to Estonia and 8,602 persons emigrated from Estonia.

International students and graduates continue to contribute more in taxes to the Estonian economy
According to Statistics Estonia, in the academic year 2020/2021, international students and graduates in Estonia paid more than ever before in labour taxes: a total of 16 million euros. At the same time, the number of international students was smaller, while the number of international graduates continued to rise. International students and graduates were most likely to work in information and communication as well as in education. Compared to local students, they worked more often in start-up enterprises.

According to Statistics Estonia, in November 2021, Estonian accommodation establishments served over 167,000 tourists, which is 42% more than in November 2020. The number of domestic tourists decreased, while the number of foreign tourists increased.

According to Statistics Estonia, in November 2021, Estonia’s rapid trade growth continued. Exports of goods increased by 30% and imports by 36% year on year. Growth was highest in trade with the European Union Member States and primarily with the neighbouring countries.
