Young workers are turning away from the information and communication sector

Statistics Estonia's short-term labour market statistics show that over the past year and a half, there have been fewer young people aged 20–29 working in both the broader information and communication sector and the more specific field of computer programming. While in previous years the field of computer programming was growing mainly because of young people, in the past year their numbers have fallen.

Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before

According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

In February both exports and imports of goods grew

According to Statistics Estonia, in February exports of goods from Estonia at current prices grew by 24% and imports to Estonia by 9% compared to February of the previous year. The growth in trade was caused mainly by the growth of exports and imports in mineral products.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 1st quarter of 2010 the percentage change of the construction price index was -7.1% compared to the 1st quarter of 2009. The construction price index fell for five quarters in succession.

Exports exceeded imports in February

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, the surplus in trade was registered in February, when exports of goods exceeded imports by 0.2 billion kroons. The surplus was last registered in trade in June 1993.

The pilot Census of PHC 2011 came to an end

According to Statistics Estonia, in the midnight of 31 March the pilot Census of the 2011 Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011) came to an end, in the course of which, according to preliminary data, a total of 12,531 persons were enumerated. For the first time, the people could enumerate themselves via the Internet.

Tax ratio increased due to indirect taxes

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2009 the Estonian overall tax ratio was 36% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Compared to 2008, the ratio of taxes rose by 4 percentage points, mostly due to the increase of excise duties.
