The production of cereals reached a record-breaking high last year

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, cereal production was 1,535,300 tonnes in 2015, which is 26% more than the year before and the largest volume ever recorded in Estonia.

Total cereal production included 812,600 tonnes of wheat, 556,600 tonnes of barley and 54,700 tonnes of rye. The average yield per hectare was 4,382 kilograms of cereals, whereas the average yield for wheat was 4,788 kilograms, for barley 4,235 kilograms and for rye 3,823 kilograms.

In 2015, the sown area of cereals was the largest in recent years. Cereals were grown on a total of 350,400 hectares, which is 5% more than in the previous year. The sown area of wheat was 169,700 hectares, which was 10% more than in the previous year. The sown area of barley increased by 4% and amounted to 131,400 hectares in 2015. The sown area of rye decreased by 7% and amounted to 14,300 hectares.

The production of legumes was 86,200 tonnes, which is two times more than in 2014. The average yield was 2,756 kilograms of legumes per hectare. Legumes were sown on 31,300 hectares, which is 64% more than the year before and also the largest sown area of legumes ever.

According to preliminary data, the yield of rape and turnip rape seed was 196,300 tonnes. In 2015, rape and turnip rape were sown on 70,800 hectares. The average yield was 2,771 kilograms of rape and turnip rape seed per hectare.

The production of potatoes amounted to 117,200 tonnes, which is the same as the year before. The sown area of potatoes was 5,800 hectares in 2015. The average yield of potatoes was 20,138 kilograms per hectare.
