In summer there were less tourists than a year ago

In the high season of tourism or in the three summer months 553,000 foreign tourists used the services of accommodation establishments. Compared to the summer months of previous year, the number of tourists decreased in June (11%) and remained at the previous year level in July and August. A big cultural event, the Song and Dance Festival, that took place in Estonia at the beginning of July, and the concert of a global star at the beginning of August attracted a lot of tourists from our neighbouring countries. Both in July and August, more tourists from Finland used the services of accommodation establishments than at the same time of the previous year. The number of tourists from Russia was larger in all summer months compared to the previous summer. In August 47% more tourists from Latvia stayed in accommodation establishments than in July and nearly a quarter more than in August last year.

As usual, most of the foreign tourists stayed in Tallinn. Two-thirds of foreign tourists used the services of accommodation establishments of the capital city and the share of Tallinn increased by two percentage points compared to the previous year.

Residents of Estonia used the services of accommodation establishments less than a year ago. 272,000 residents of Estonia or 72,000 tourists less stayed in accommodation establishments compared to the summer of the previous year. 62% of the accommodated domestic tourists were on a holiday trip and 20% on a business trip.

In August 970 accommodation establishments with 19,900 rooms and 45,200 beds were available for tourists. The room occupancy rate was 45%. The average cost of a guest night in an accommodation establishment was 421 kroons, which was 11% cheaper compared to August of the previous year. The average cost of a guest night was the highest in Tallinn (on average 503 kroons), but in the capital city, too, the average cost of a guest night was by 80 kroons cheaper compared to August of the previous year.
