More foreign tourists in Estonian accommodation establishments

According to Statistics Estonia, 223,000 tourists stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments in January. Their total number of nights spent was 411,000. 58% of the tourists were foreign tourists and 42% were domestic tourists.

In total, 128,000 foreign tourists used the services of accommodation establishments. Compared to January 2019, the number of foreign tourists increased by 13%. One third of them came from Russia, 31% Finland from and 8% from Latvia. Year-on-year, the number of tourists from Russia and Finland increased by 20% and 25%, respectively, while the number of tourists from Latvia increased by 4%.

Most foreign tourists came to Estonia for a holiday, some came on business and the rest had some other reason for visiting. Foreign tourists spent 259,000 nights in Estonia, which is 8% more than in January 2019. Foreign tourists preferred the accommodation establishments of Harju, Pärnu and Tartu counties.

In January, 95,000 domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments and their nights spent totalled 152,000. The number of domestic tourists remained at the level of January last year, while the number of nights spent decreased by 2%. Most domestic tourists were on holiday and almost a quarter were on a business trip. They mainly stayed in Harju, Tartu, Pärnu and Ida-Viru counties.

In January, 962 accommodation establishments were available for tourists. The average cost of a guest night was 38 euros. In Harju county, the average cost of a guest night was 46 euros, in Tartu county 38 euros, in Pärnu county 30 euros and in Ida-Viru county 34 euros.

The statistics are based on the questionnaire “Accommodation”, the submission deadline of which was 10 February 2020. Statistics Estonia published the monthly summary in 18 working days.
