Accommodation establishments did well in October
According to Statistics Estonia, in October, 289,000 tourists stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments, which is 5% more than in October 2018. The number of nights spent by tourists increased by 7%.
As opposed to a few prior years, in October, the number of foreign tourists increased year on year. They numbered 173,000 (an increase of 6%) and accounted for 60% of the tourists who used the services of accommodation establishments. There was an increase in the number of tourists from Russia and Finland as well as from Germany, Lithuania and Sweden.
Foreign tourists spent 346,000 nights in accommodation establishments. Two thirds came to Estonia for a holiday, 27% were on a business trip and the rest had some other reason for visiting. The majority of foreign tourists (75%) stayed in accommodation establishments of Harju county, 8% in Pärnu county, 6% in Tartu county and 5% in Ida-Viru county.
In October, 116,000 Estonian residents stayed in accommodation establishments, which is 5,000 more than in the same month of the previous year. Domestic tourists spent 199,000 nights in accommodation establishments, which is an increase of 4% year on year. 60% of domestic tourists were on holiday and 27% on a business trip. 28% of domestic tourists stayed in Harju county, 14% in Pärnu county, 15% in Tartu county and 11% in Ida-Viru county.
In October, 1,032 accommodation establishments had 21,000 rooms and 49,000 bed places available for tourists. 47% of the rooms and 36% of the bed places were occupied. The average cost of a guest night in an accommodation establishment was 38 euros, which is as much as in October 2018. In Harju county, the average cost of a guest night was 43 euros, in Tartu county 39 euros, in Pärnu county 31 euros and in Ida-Viru county 32 euros.

The statistics are based on the questionnaire “Accommodation”, the submission deadline of which was 10 November 2019. Statistics Estonia published the monthly summary in 20 working days. For the statistical activity “Accommodation”, the main representative of public interest is the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, commissioned by whom Statistics Estonia collects and analyses the data necessary for conducting the statistical activity.
