In January, the number of tourists in accommodation establishments increased

According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2016, 178,000 domestic and foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which is 6% more than in January 2015. Both the number of domestic and foreign tourists increased.

98,000 foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which was 6% more than in January 2015. At the same time, the number of nights spent by foreign tourists increased 2%. As the number of nights spent increased less than the number of tourists, the average duration of stay in accommodation establishments was slightly shorter than in January 2015. There was a 2% increase in the number of tourists arriving from Finland compared to the same month of the previous year. The number of tourists arriving from Russia remained on the same level as in January 2015 and therefore, for the first time in a year and a half, the number of tourists arriving from Russia did not decrease. 20% more tourists from Latvia, which is the third main tourism partner of Estonia, stayed in accommodation establishments. There was an increase in the number of tourists arriving from various European countries and the USA. The number of tourists arriving from Asian countries continues to increase. 76% of foreign tourists preferred to stay in the accommodation establishments of Tallinn. 4% of foreign tourists stayed in the accommodation establishments of Pärnu city and 6% in Tartu city.

80,000 domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which was 7% more than in January 2015. 62% of the domestic tourists were on a holiday trip and 23% were on a business trip. 28% of the domestic tourists stayed in the accommodation establishments of Harju county, 15% in Pärnu county and 10% in Tartu county. Compared to January 2015, the number of domestic tourists staying in accommodation establishments increased in all the three counties.

In January, 877 accommodation establishments offered services for tourists. 18,000 rooms and 41,000 beds were available for tourists. One third of the rooms and 26% of the beds were occupied. The average cost of a guest night was 35 euros and was one euro more than in January 2015. The average cost of a guest night was higher than the Estonian average in Harju county where it cost 41 euros. The average cost of a guest night was 25 euros in Pärnu county and 29 euros in Tartu county.
