In August, fewer tourists stayed in accommodation establishments than in the same month a year ago

According to Statistics Estonia, 379,000 tourists stayed in accommodation establishments in August, which was 2% less than in August of the previous year. The number of foreign tourists decreased and the number of domestic tourists increased.

In August, 239,000 foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which was 4% less than in August of the previous year. 55% of the foreign tourists arrived from the neighbouring countries Finland, Russia and Latvia. The number of tourists from Russia staying in accommodation establishments was 12% smaller than in August of the previous year and the number of tourists from Latvia and Finland decreased by 5% and 9%, respectively. Also, fewer tourists stayed in accommodation establishments from Sweden, Lithuania, the United Kingdom, Poland and Norway. However, there were 14% more tourists from Germany staying in accommodation establishments than in August a year ago. The number of tourists arriving from Asian countries continues to increase, although the growth was slower than in the previous months of the year. About two-thirds of the foreign tourists who used the services of accommodation establishments stayed in the accommodation establishments of Tallinn. The next most popular destinations were Pärnu, Tartu and Saare counties, accounting for 10%, 6% and 5% of all accommodated foreign tourists, respectively. 77% of the foreign tourists were on a holiday trip and 16% were on a business trip.

In August, 140,000 domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which was 3% more than in August of the previous year. A fifth of the accommodated domestic tourists stayed in Harju county, 17% in Pärnu county and 8% in both Saare county and Ida-Viru county. 65% of the domestic tourists were on a holiday trip and 20% were on a business trip.

In August, 1,295 accommodation establishments offered services for tourists. 23,000 rooms and 55,000 beds were available for tourists. In August the room occupancy rate was 52% and the bed occupancy rate was 42%. The room occupancy rate was higher in Tallinn, Tartu and Pärnu cities (79%, 66% and 64%, respectively). The average cost of a guest night was 33 euros, which is one euro higher than in August 2013. The average cost of a guest night in Tallinn and in Pärnu was higher than the country’s average.
