By the afternoon of Saturday, 7 January, more than 200,000 persons had been enumerated online. This represents about 15% of the Estonian population. Participation rates are still the highest in Tartu and Harju counties.

“This result is much better than we expected, considering that it is only the first week of the census,” said Mr Priit Potisepp, Director General of Statistics Estonia. “The census team would like to thank all the people who have shown a great interest in the e-census, despite some small problems in the first few days of the census,” said Potisepp.

Potisepp emphasised that people should look at the system load meter before logging in, to ensure that the enumeration goes smoothly. He also recommends respondents to read the information on the census website before they start the e-census.

As of 17:00 on 7 January, 201,094 persons had been enumerated online, including 18% of Tartu county residents, 17% of Harju county residents and 16% of Järva county residents (based on estimated population figures).

The number of enumerated persons by county can be seen on the census website at www.stat.ee/58604. The census progress is updated hourly.

It should be noted that the table published on the website includes people who have been enumerated twice. The data will be revised during the data processing after the census and each person will only be counted once.

The e-census questionnaires can be completed on the census website www.REL2011.ee until 31 January. All permanent residents of Estonia aged 15 and above can complete the census questionnaires themselves. The questionnaires on children will be completed by their parents or guardians.

Should respondents have any questions about completing the census online, they can contact customer support by email at klienditugi [at] stat.ee (klienditugi[at]stat[dot]ee) or by phone at 625 9100. The working hours of the customer support are 08:00 to 22:00 every day.

N.B. Respondents should bear in mind that the household member who is the first to log into the e-census environment will be asked to complete the list of household members (including their personal identification codes) as the first step. Only after that can other members of the household start completing their Personal Questionnaires. After you exit the system, you should always close the browser window.

The census is conducted until 31 March. During the first month (31 Dec 2011 to 31 Jan 2012), the permanent residents of Estonia can complete the census online. Those who do not participate in the e-census will be visited by an enumerator in the period of 16 February to 31 March 2012.
