Consumer price index in May

According to Statistics Estonia, the consumer price index fell by 0.3% in May 2009 compared to May 2008 and was 0.0% compared to April 2009.

The decrease of the consumer price index compared to the same month of the previous year was fixed for the first time in Estonia. Compared to May of the previous year, goods were 2.3% cheaper and services 3.6% more expensive. From goods food products were 0.8% more expensive and manufactured goods 4.9% cheaper.

Regulated prices of goods and services have risen by 4.3% and non-regulated prices fallen by 1.6% compared to May of the previous year.

Compared to May of the previous year, the consumer price index was mainly influenced by alcoholic beverages and tobacco (the price increase together 18.6%), by the price decrease of motor fuel (-21%) and by the price decrease of food (-5%). Over a half of the impact of food to the index gave milk and dairy products (price decrease 14.8%).

In May compared to the previous month, the consumer price index was mainly influenced by the price increase of motor fuel and by continuous price decrease of heat energy and food, especially of dairy products.
