Commissioned by the Government of Estonia, Statistics Estonia, together with Telia, Tele2 and Elisa, are conducting mobility analysis based on anonymous data of the mobile networks. The first results show that the mobility of people has decreased as a result of the stricter restrictions introduced on 11 March and resembles that of the emergency situation period of last year.

The decrease of population number slowed down

According to Statistics Estonia, by preliminary estimation the number of population in Estonia on 1 January 2009 was 1,340,300. Due to the increase in the number of births and to the decrease in the number of deaths the decline in population number slowed down last year.
Egg production was the smallest in years

According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2019, milk production increased by 3% and meat production by 5%, while egg production was smaller than ever. Compared to 2018, the number of dairy cows, sheep and poultry decreased, while the number of pigs increased.
Exports and imports of goods both increased in March

In March, the trade deficit was 234 million euros, which is 34 million euros less than in the same month last year. Jane Leppmets, foreign trade statistics analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, in the first quarter, exports of goods increased by 4% and imports by 3% compared with the first quarter of 2025. “The increased exports in the first quarter resulted mainly from the 11% rise in re-exports, while the exports of goods of Estonian origin were unchanged year on year. According to the data of the 2011 Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011), 24,907 permanent residents of Estonia – 4.4% of all employed persons – go to work abroad. 28,984 residents work outside their county of residence.
