Census data show that an estimated 76% of Estonia’s population speak a foreign language. While 10 years ago the most widely spoken foreign language in Estonia was Russian, today it is English. Estonian is spoken by 84% of the population: 67% speak it as a mother tongue and 17% as a foreign language.

Eveli Šokman, team lead of producer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared with March 2024, the producer price index was most affected by price increases in the manufacture of wood and wood products, in electricity production, and in the manufacture of food products. “Falling prices in the manufacture of fuel oils, paper and paper products, and furniture had the opposite effect on the index. Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that 108,000 foreign and 109,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in March 2025. “The number of foreign tourists was 7% lower than in March last year and it was also smaller compared with March 2019 (down by 13%),” explained Laurmaa. Similarly to the earlier months of this year, accommodation establishments served more domestic than foreign tourists in March. According to Statistics Estonia, in 2023, the consumer price index increased by 9.2% compared with the average of 2022. Price changes related to food and non-alcoholic beverages had the biggest impact on the consumer price index in 2023.

Today, on 25 February, the Statistical Council held a meeting where they reviewed last year’s results and commended the production of official statistics, but the Council also acknowledged that the statistical system continues to be underfunded. The Council was briefed on the methodology approved by Statistics Estonia for the Population and Housing Census: namely, a register-based census, which is in accordance with EU regulations, combined with a sample survey to collect data on characteristics not covered by registers.

According to Statistics Estonia, in March, the consumer price index increased by 0.7% compared with February and by 15.3% compared with March 2022. Goods were 14.4% and services 17.2% more expensive than in March last year.

Krista Vaikmets, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that wage growth was stable at 5 to 6%. “Year on year, wages have increased in all counties, with the greatest increase registered in Rapla and Järva counties where the rise in gross wages and salaries was about 7%. The increase in average monthly wages was the smallest in Viljandi and Tartu counties – about 5%,” said Vaikmets. Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared with February last year, turnover volume grew by 21% in enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel and by 6% in stores selling manufactured goods. “In grocery stores, the volume of turnover declined by 5% in February year on year,” added Pihlak. The number of foreign tourists has shown considerable growth over the last year but has not yet fully recovered from the slump a few years ago. “Compared with April 2024, the number of foreign tourists increased by 16%.
