Today, on 25 February, the Statistical Council held a meeting where they reviewed last year’s results and commended the production of official statistics, but the Council also acknowledged that the statistical system continues to be underfunded. The Council was briefed on the methodology approved by Statistics Estonia for the Population and Housing Census: namely, a register-based census, which is in accordance with EU regulations, combined with a sample survey to collect data on characteristics not covered by registers.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the second quarter of 2020, the Dwelling Price Index decreased by 5.8% compared to the first quarter, but increased by 4% compared to the second quarter of 2019.

Sigrid Saagpakk, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, in the first quarter of 2025, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were the highest in Tallinn (2,384 euros) and in Harju (2,263 euros) and Tartu (2,023 euros) counties. “Compared with the first quarter of last year, the biggest increase in wages was seen in Tartu (7.2%) and Ida-Viru (6.9%) counties. Krista Vaikmets, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that there was a year-on-year increase in average monthly gross wages in all counties, but the extent of the wage growth varied regionally. “The increase in average gross wages was the biggest in Ida-Viru county (8%) and Hiiu county (7%) and somewhat more modest in Põlva, Jõgeva and Valga counties, where the rise in wages was around 4%,” said Vaikmets. In comparison with May 2024, the producer price index in this year’s May was most affected by price increases in the manufacture of wood and wood products and in the manufacture of food products. Falling prices in the manufacture of fuel oils and in electricity production had the opposite effect on the index.
