The places where people live have been recorded in one way or another for centuries. Previously, the place of registration could have been a church, municipality government, city address board, housing board or the Population Register. In recent decades, developed countries have found that register data are usually more accurate than survey data, and so population censuses have also begun to use them. Back in 2011, eight European Union countries conducted the census on a register basis: in addition to the Nordic countries, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Slovenia.

In comparison with May 2024, turnover volume grew by 13% in enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel and by 5% in stores selling manufactured goods. Helle Bunder, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, explained that manufacturing output, which had shown growth for eight months, started to decrease slightly in September. “Although output increased in most larger manufacturing industries, there was a notable fall in production volumes in several medium-sized manufacturing activities. A more significant decrease occurred in the manufacture of shale oil (37.9%), machinery and equipment n.e.c. (22.2%) and beverages (21%),” she added. Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that 119,000 foreign and 128,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in November 2024. The number of domestic tourists, which was in decline for most months in 2024 year on year, took an upturn in October 2024 and continued this trend in November. Still, the number of tourists remained 6% smaller than in November of 2019, the pre-pandemic record year. “Compared with November 2019, there were 12,000 more domestic tourists accommodated, while the number of foreign tourists was lower by 27,000 in November 2024,” added Laurmaa

Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that nearly 1.86 million foreign tourists and nearly 1.76 million domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in 2024. “Compared with 2023, there were 11% more foreign tourists, while the number of domestic tourists remained at the same level. The Cultural Participation Survey conducted by Statistics Estonia reveals that over half a million people in Estonia went to the cinema at least once last year. Almost the same number of people attended a concert. Overall, 79% of residents aged 15 and over participated in a cultural event in 2023.

278,000 foreign and approximately 224,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in July. “As in July last year, we had more foreign tourists (55%) than domestic tourists (45%) accommodated in this year’s July,” said Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia. In 2025, the number of foreign tourists staying in our accommodation establishments has increased in almost every month. “Compared with July last year, the number of foreign tourists was up by 2%, but it was still 15% lower than in July 2019, before the pandemic,” she noted.
