Estonia's air is among the cleanest in the world. However, we also have air pollution. Polluted air is a considerable environmental threat to human health. Most harmful are tiny particles from vehicle emissions, combustion processes and chemical reactions in the atmosphere. Statistics provide an overview of air emissions in Estonia and their origin, for example emissions of chemical and organic compounds and fine particles; emissions of gases caused by acid rain. The data on air pollutant emissions are used when drawing up development and action plans and for monitoring air quality.

Russia’s aggression against Ukraine has forced millions of Ukrainians to flee their homes and homeland. Many of them have found a new home in Estonia. Ukrainian citizens and their family members who have come to Estonia because of the war can apply for temporary protection, which includes the right to work in the country. According to Statistics Estonia, 22.8% of Estonia’s population lived at risk of poverty and 1.4% in absolute poverty in 2021. Compared with 2020, the share of people living at risk of poverty rose 2.2% and the share of people living in absolute poverty fell 0.8%.

Biggest national culture survey: people mainly go to the cinema or a concert for entertainment

The Cultural Participation Survey conducted by Statistics Estonia reveals that over half a million people in Estonia went to the cinema at least once last year. Almost the same number of people attended a concert. Overall, 79% of residents aged 15 and over participated in a cultural event in 2023.

Landfilling of hazardous waste affects the quality of soil, drinking water and air.
