Consumer price index up by 3.4% in April year on year
According to Statistics Estonia, in April, the consumer price index increased by 0.8% compared with March and by 3.4% compared with April 2025. Goods were 3.8% and services 2.8% more expensive than in April last year.
“Due to the armed conflicts in the Middle East, the prices of diesel fuel and petrol continued to rise rapidly, which had a significant impact on the consumer price index for April,” said Lauri Veski, the Consumer Price Statistics Service Manager at Statistics Estonia.
Compared with April 2025, the rise in the consumer price index was influenced the most by the 9.2% increase in transport costs and 3.7% higher housing-related costs. “Prices in transport were mainly driven up by the rise in diesel fuel and petrol prices – up by 39.1% and 10.3%, respectively. The increase in housing costs was due to the 4.8% more expensive electricity and the 16.3% increase in the cost of water supply. The index rise was slowed down by the prices of clothing and footwear which fell by 4.3% year on year,” added Veski.
The prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 2.6% in April year on year. “Prices were up by 5% for alcoholic beverages and by 16% for tobacco, which can partially be explained by increased excise duty rates, whereas tobacco excise duty has been raised twice over the last year,” explained Veski.
Compared with April 2025, prices increased by 8.2% for vegetables, by 2.9% for fresh or frozen meat, by 11.8% for eggs, by 10% for coffee and by 11.5% for chocolate. The price of butter has continued to decline and was 24.5% cheaper than in April last year.
Compared with March, the consumer price index for April was influenced the most by the increase in the prices of diesel fuel (10.4%) and petrol (4.3%). The 1.9% lower cost of electricity had the opposite effect on the index. Among food products, there were notable increases in the prices of fresh vegetables (11.2%) and citrus fruits (11.6%). Compared with March, cheese was 2.5% and fresh berries 6.7% cheaper.
