Young workers are turning away from the information and communication sector
Statistics Estonia's short-term labour market statistics show that over the past year and a half, there have been fewer young people aged 20–29 working in both the broader information and communication sector and the more specific field of computer programming. While in previous years the field of computer programming was growing mainly because of young people, in the past year their numbers have fallen.

Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before
According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

The slowdown in the growth of industrial production continued in November
According to Statistics Estonia, in November 2011, the production of industrial enterprises grew 1% compared to the same month of the previous year. The annual growth of industrial production was smaller than in the previous month. The slowdown of the growth was most of all influenced by the production of electronic and metal products.

Presentation of the most thorough book on the Estonian population
Today, on 29 December, Professor Emeritus Ene-Margit Tiit, the Head of Methodology of the 2011 Population and Housing Census, presents her latest book “Eesti rahvastik. Viis põlvkonda ja kümme loendust” (The Estonian Population: Five Generations and Ten Censuses). The presentation starts at 13:00 at the Rahva Raamat bookstore in the Viru Keskus shopping centre.

Bunny Juss introduces the coming census
A cartoon has been created in cooperation between the website lastekas.ee and Statistics Estonia. It features the popular cartoon character Bunny Juss and his family who tell the children about the Population and Housing Census, which begins on this Saturday, 31 December.

E-census questionnaires can also be completed at libraries
The online questionnaires of the 2011 Population and Housing Census, which starts on 31 December, can also be completed at public libraries, which have already been supplied with the necessary ID card readers. Residents can participate in the e-census from 31 December until the end of January.

The percentage of people living in relative poverty increased last year
According to Statistics Estonia in 2010, 17.5% of the Estonian population lived in relative poverty. The percentage of people living in relative poverty increased 1.7 percentage points compared to the previous year. In 2009 the at-risk-of-poverty rate was 15.8%.

Information leaflets on the census will be sent to every household
Starting today, 15 December, Statistics Estonia will send out information leaflets on the Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011) beginning on 31 December. The leaflets will be delivered to all mailboxes of private individuals in Estonia – with the help of Estonian Post, the leaflets will reach more than 650,000 mailboxes.

In 2012, Statistics Estonia will collect the data from nearly 40,000 economic units. From now on, it is possible to check on the web site of Statistics Estonia whether the economic unit has been picked into the sample and has an obligation to submit the data.

Final results of the Agricultural Census provide an overview of the agriculture of Estonia
According to Statistics Estonia, on the basis of the final results of the 2010 Agricultural Census the concentration of production into large holdings as well as high percentage of rented land characterises the agriculture of Estonia. Due to the still high percentage of small holdings, the number of persons involved in agriculture is near to 60,000.
