HICP flash estimate: prices up by 0.3% in August
According to the preliminary estimate of Statistics Estonia, in August 2026, the harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP), which includes the expenditures of tourists, increased by 0.3% compared with July. Compared with August last year, the HICP rose by 1.3%. This is a flash estimate which will be refined once more detailed data on August prices are received.
The consumer price index uses weights reflecting the average expenditure structure of Estonian residents, while the harmonised index of consumer prices also takes into account the expenditures of tourists and is comparable to the international HICP.
Lauri Veski, the Consumer Price Statistics Service Manager at Statistics Estonia, said that the year-on-year increase in prices has not been this low since spring 2021, when the economy was recovering from the coronavirus pandemic. “Compared with August 2025, the index was primarily influenced by the increase in housing-related and transport costs, on the one hand, and by the fall in the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, on the other hand,” added Veski.
The consumer price index data for August will be published by Statistics Estonia on Monday, 7 September. The HICP data for August will be published on 16 September.
