Today, on 25 February, the Statistical Council held a meeting where they reviewed last year’s results and commended the production of official statistics, but the Council also acknowledged that the statistical system continues to be underfunded. Jane Leppmets, foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, pointed out that unlike the balance of foreign trade in goods, the balance of foreign trade in services continues to show a surplus, which means that Estonian economic entities export significantly more services than they import. Economic entities include enterprises and non-profit entities, for instance, non-profit associations and state agencies. “In the second quarter, exports of services exceeded imports by €815 million. The surplus was €9 million bigger than in the second quarter last year,” added Leppmets. The top services

According to Statistics Estonia, in April, the consumer price index increased by 0.9% compared with March and by 2.8% compared with April 2023. Goods were 2.4% and services 3.3% more expensive than in April last year.

Today, Statistics Estonia presented a wages and salaries application, which visualises median wages by Estonian regions and counties for 110 most common occupations.

In September, Kaie Koskaru-Nelk, former Deputy Secretary General of Fiscal Policy of the Ministry of Finance, will assume office as Deputy Director General of Statistics Estonia. Koskaru-Nelk, who has worked in management positions in the public sector for over 20 years, will be responsible for strategic management of statistical analysis departments and international cooperation.

According to Statistics Estonia and Eesti Pank, in the fourth quarter of 2023, Estonia’s exports of services grew by 5% and imports by 7% compared with the same quarter of 2022. Sales of services to non-residents totalled 3.1 billion euros and purchases of services from non-residents amounted to 2.3 billion euros at current prices. Total exports of services increased by 9% and imports by 8% last year.

In June, Statistics Estonia’s electronic data collection channel eSTAT was upgraded with a long-awaited and more consumer-friendly user interface. Data submission in the upgraded environment is easier and the channel itself is more user-friendly.

Iti, a virtual assistant, is serving customers on the website of Statistics Estonia since April. Iti can respond to the most common questions of data providers and users of statistics. If Iti does not know the answer, it directs the question to customer support, based on the content asked.
