In May, turnover grew the most in stores selling manufactured goods
According to Statistics Estonia, in May 2021, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 778 million euros. Compared to May 2020, turnover increased by 18% at constant prices.
Jaanika Tiigiste, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, explained that, in May, the turnover growth of retail trade enterprises was mostly influenced by stores selling manufactured goods, where turnover increased by 32%. “The reopening of shopping centres and stores selling building materials in early May helped to boost the turnover of stores selling manufactured goods,” added Tiigiste.
Compared to May 2020, the turnover of stores selling manufactured goods grew in all economic activities. The biggest increase at 58% was recorded in the turnover of stores selling textiles, clothing and footwear. The increase in turnover was 40% in stores selling second-hand goods and in non-store retail sale (stalls, markets, direct sale), and 33% in stores selling household goods and appliances, hardware and building materials, which is also above average.
Compared to May 2020, turnover increased by 3% in grocery stores and by 14% in enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel.
In May compared to April, the turnover of retail trade enterprises increased by 17%. According to the seasonally and working-day adjusted data, turnover increased by 6%.
In the first five months of 2021, the turnover of retail trade enterprises increased by 11% compared to the same period of the previous year.
The statistics are based on the VAT declaration data of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board. Statistics Estonia performs the statistical activity “Financial statistics of trade enterprises (monthly)” for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in order to determine how the Estonian economy is doing.
