1,360,745 people: Estonia’s population declined for the second year in a row

According to Statistics Estonia, on 1 January 2026, the population of Estonia stood at 1,360,745. This is 9,250 persons fewer than at the same time the year before. Estonia’s population decreased for the second year in a row. There were 9,240 births and 15,688 deaths last year. 15,212 persons immigrated to Estonia and 18,014 persons emigrated.

Passenger traffic through Tallinn Airport was unchanged last year, air freight transport increased

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2025, Tallinn Airport served nearly 3.5 million passengers, which is at the same level as the year before. There was a decrease in passenger traffic on domestic routes between Tallinn and the main islands. The air transport of freight and mail increased.

HICP flash estimate: prices down by 0.2% in March

According to the preliminary estimate of Statistics Estonia, in March, the harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP), which includes the expenditures of tourists, decreased by 0.2% compared with February. Compared with March last year, the HICP rose by 3.3%. This is a flash estimate which will be refined once more detailed data on March prices are received.

In January, the consumer price index was up by 3.7% year on year

According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2026, the consumer price index increased by 1% compared with December 2025 and by 3.7% compared with January 2025. Compared with December, food prices were up by 2.3% in January.

The share of the service sector has grown in all counties

According to Statistics Estonia, 64%, i.e. the majority of the value added generated in the Estonian economy in 2016 was created in Harju county. The share of the service sector continues to grow, having increased in 2016 by more than 2 percentage points in most counties.

In October, trade increased

According to Statistics Estonia, in October 2017, the exports and imports of goods increased both by 11% compared to October 2016. This year Finland has been the most important trade partner for Estonia. In October, exports to Finland increased by 18% and imports from Finland by 15%.

The quantity of pesticides placed on the market in Estonia increased in 2016

According to Statistics Estonia, 834 tonnes of pesticides (by active substance) were placed on the market in Estonia in 2016, which is 17% more than in the previous year. The quantity of sold pesticides continues to increase.

In November, the consumer price index was affected the most by food and motor fuel

According to Statistics Estonia, the change of the consumer price index in November 2017 was 0.5% compared to October 2017 and 4.2% compared to November of the previous year.

In the 3rd quarter, the number of job vacancies increased

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2017, there were approximately 12,700 job vacancies in the enterprises, institutions and organisations of Estonia. This is the highest number of job vacancies in recent years.

In October, the number of tourists in accommodation establishments increased

According to Statistics Estonia, 271,100 domestic and foreign tourists stayed in the accommodation establishments of Estonia in October 2017, which is 1% more than in October 2016.

In October, turnover growth of retail trade enterprises continued

According to Statistics Estonia, in October 2017, compared to October of the previous year, the turnover of retail trade enterprises increased 2% at constant prices.

Expenditure on research and development decreased last year

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2016, the expenditure on research and development (R&D) in Estonia amounted to 270.3 million euros, which is 11% less than in 2015.

In October, the volume of industrial production was greater than a year ago

According to Statistics Estonia, in October 2017, the production of industrial enterprises increased 6% compared to October 2016. Production increased in mining and quarrying but decreased in the energy sector.

The economy continued to grow in the 3rd quarter

According to Statistics Estonia, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Estonia increased 4.2% in the 3rd quarter of 2017 compared to the 3rd quarter of the previous year.

In the 3rd quarter, year-over-year growth in average wages and salaries continued to accelerate

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2017, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were 1,201 euros, having increased 7.4% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2016. The year-over-year growth in wages and salaries accelerated for the second consecutive quarter.

The profit of the business sector decreased in the 3rd quarter

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2017, the total profit of the business sector was 787 million euros, which is 8% less than in the same period the year before.
