In November, the consumer price index was up by 4.9% year on year
According to Statistics Estonia, in November, the consumer price index decreased by 0.2% compared with October and increased by 4.9% compared with November 2024. Goods were 2.9% and services 7.9% more expensive than in November last year.
Lauri Veski, team lead of consumer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that food prices are the main driver of overall inflation, as food products have the biggest weight in the consumer price index. “The prices of food products decreased in September and October but started to increase again in November,” added Veski.
Compared with October, food products were 1% more expensive in November. The biggest impact came from the rise in the prices of vegetables (1.9%), cheese (3.3%), fresh or frozen fish (7.7%) and bread and bakery products (2.7%). Decreases in the prices of fresh fruits and vegetables (1.4%) and sausages and smoked meat products (1%) had the opposite effect on the index.
“Compared with October this year, there was a fall in November in the prices of holiday trips, plane tickets and hotel accommodation,” noted Veski. Electricity was 1.6% more expensive than in the previous month. Petrol was 8.1% and diesel fuel 10.8% more expensive in November. The prices of clothing and footwear were up by 1% from October. Expenditure on housing was up by 0.3%, including a 0.5% rise in rent.
“Looking at the major commodity groups compared with November 2024, prices decreased by 5.7% for clothing and footwear and by 0.1% for recreation and leisure, while the prices of food products increased by 6.5%,” said Veski to describe year-on-year changes in the index.
The main contributors to the 6.5% rise in food prices year on year were increases in the prices of meat and meat products (7.1%), milk, dairy products and eggs (8.4%), fruits (6.3%) and chocolate (27.8%). Compared with November last year, there was a decrease in the prices of fresh vegetables (5.5%), sugar (8.2%), olive oil (15%) and flour and cereals (2.6%).
