29% of people in Estonia are estimated to be affiliated with a religion. This figure has remained unchanged over the last three population censuses. However, the proportion of people who do not feel an affiliation to any religion has increased – from 54% in 2011 to 58% in 2021. The most prevalent religion in Estonia is Orthodox Christianity.

How great is inequality in Estonia and how is it divided? As part of the analysis, 11 person profiles were created to depict social gaps and inequality in Estonia. The profiles included a person’s household type, number of children in the household, as well as age, sex, education, ethnic nationality, place of residence, disability and its degree, income, employment, benefits received, distance between place of residence and place of work, health status and satisfaction with life.

Births and deaths are a normal part of life. They also have an impact on the number of population of a country. Around a half of deaths in Estonia are caused by diseases of the circulatory system, followed by cancers. The number of deaths caused by cancers gradually increases with age. The causes of death are very different by age. Almost a half of the deaths of children and young people are a result of accidents. Deaths caused by accidents decrease with age. The data on the deaths of Estonian inhabitants help to predict population change and implement measures to prevent early deaths.

Healthy life years (also called disability-free life expectancy) shows the average number of years an individual is expected to live free of disability if current patterns of mortality and disability continue to apply. To calculate healthy life years, Statistics Estonia uses the internationally recommended Sullivan method, which is convenient as few data are needed. It requires the mean annual population for five-year periods by sex and age groups, the number of deaths and the share of people with good health in these age groups. Number of people living in absolute poverty rose by two and a half times

According to Statistics Estonia, 22.5% of Estonia’s population lived at risk of poverty and 3.5% in absolute poverty in 2022. Compared with 2021, the share of people living at risk of poverty decreased by 0.3 percentage points and the share of people living in absolute poverty increased by 2.1 percentage points.

The winners of the European Statistics Competition for the academic year 2019–2020 were announced yesterday, 7 September. In the younger age group, team Fresiito from Tallinn Secondary School of Science won the third place.
