Consumer price index fell in July

According to Statistics Estonia, in July, the consumer price index decreased by 0.6% compared with June 2023 and increased by 6.4% compared with July 2022. Goods were 8.1% and services 3.1% more expensive than in July last year.
General government budget is in deficit, debt doubled in a year

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2020, the Estonian general government deficit was 4.8% and the gross debt level was 18% of the gross domestic product. At the end of 2020, the general government consolidated expenditures exceeded the revenues by 1.3 billion euros.

In March, the trade deficit was 234 million euros, which is 34 million euros less than in the same month last year. The earnings application, first published more than a year ago, was upgraded by Statistics Estonia together with the Commissioner for Equal Opportunities, University of Tartu, Tallinn University of Technology and the Social Insurance Board. More occupational groups, comparison of males’ and females’ monthly earnings, and earnings and pension projections were added to the application.

Census data show that an estimated 76% of Estonia’s population speak a foreign language. While 10 years ago the most widely spoken foreign language in Estonia was Russian, today it is English. Estonian is spoken by 84% of the population: 67% speak it as a mother tongue and 17% as a foreign language.
