Short-term labour market statistics, (2019–2020)

Coronavirus and the ensuing economic crisis have affected the labour market also in Estonia. Since April, Statistics Estonia is publishing short-term statistics on changes in the labour market. Interactive charts give an overview of the current labour market situation on the basis of weekly data from the employment register. The charts show weekly changes in the number of employment relationships: how many were started, suspended or terminated. According to Statistics Estonia, in the fourth quarter of 2023, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were 1,904 euros, which is 9.7% higher than in the same quarter the year before. In 2023 as a whole, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were 1,832 euros, up by 11.3% compared with 2022. The median monthly gross wages were 1,578 euros in the fourth quarter of 2023 and 1,501 euros in 2023 overall.

Turnover and investments of the business sector increased

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2019, turnover increased in most economic activities. Trade, manufacturing and information and communication enterprises contributed the most to the turnover of the business sector. The growth in the sector’s turnover was negatively affected mainly by energy and mining.

Import of services takes place when a resident of Estonia purchases services from a non-resident, incl. from an economic unit that belongs to the same enterprise group but is located abroad. For providing services, it is not necessary to cross country borders, i.e. services can be provided in Estonia or abroad.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 2nd quarter of 2020, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were 1,433 euros, which is 1% higher than last year. While in county comparison, both increase and decrease in wages could be observed, the year-on-year growth has not been as modest in ten years.
