Statistics Estonia prepared an analysis for the Estonian Education and Youth Authority on the economic impact of international students working in Estonia. It appeared that during the academic year 2019/2020, international students paid 10 million euros in income and social tax in Estonia and international graduates more than 3 million euros.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the first quarter of 2024, the gross domestic product (GDP) decreased by 2.4% compared with the same period of 2023. The GDP at current prices amounted to 8.9 billion euros.

The overall percentage of people living in relative poverty increased 1.2 percentage points compared to the previous year, but the percentage of people living in absolute poverty decreased 0.8 percentage points.

This year, the Albert Pullerits young statistician’s grant was awarded to Papuna Gogoladze for the master’s thesis defended at the School of Economics and Business Administration of the University of Tartu. The aim of the grant is to motivate young people to apply and develop statistical methods.

The map application of Statistics Estonia, completed in 2014, will close on 30 June 2023.

“In the third quarter, the total number of vacant and occupied posts was a little under 604,000. The majority of the posts were in manufacturing, trade, and education,” said Sigrid Saagpakk, analyst at Statistics Estonia. Vacant posts accounted for 1.6% of the total number of posts. Statistics Estonia prepared an analysis for Archimedes Foundation on the participation of international students in the Estonian labour market and its impact on the economy. It appeared that in the previous academic year, foreign students paid eight million euros in income and social tax in Estonia. International students who graduated the year prior contributed additionally over two million euros. The share of international students who work besides studying has increased significantly in the last three years. A half of them continue working in Estonia even after receiving a diploma.

According to Statistics Estonia, 22.6% of the Estonian population lived at risk of poverty in 2017.  The percentage of people at risk of poverty increased 1.6 percentage points compared to the previous year.
