According to Statistics Estonia, in the 1st quarter of 2011, the unemployed persons numbered 99,000 and the unemployment rate was 14.4%. More than a half of the unemployed are long-term unemployed who have been unemployed for a year or more.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 4th quarter of 2010, the number of unemployed persons decreased to 93,000 and the unemployment rate to 13.6%. The annual average number of unemployed persons was the largest during the period after the restoration of independence in Estonia.

According to the data of the 2011 Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011), 24,907 permanent residents of Estonia – 4.4% of all employed persons – go to work abroad. 28,984 residents work outside their county of residence.
