This week, a high-level delegation from the Statistics Centre – Abu Dhabi (SCAD) in the United Arab Emirates is visiting Estonia and Statistics Estonia. The purpose of the visit is to further strengthen the collaboration in the field of statistics to develop and improve activities related to data-based policy making intended to fulfill the national strategic goals.

The theme of this year’s conference was “Charting New Frontiers of Official Statistics”. The directors of 40 statistical institutes in Europe discussed why and how national statistical institutes (NSIs) could go beyond the traditional function of producing official statistics, by providing additional data services and serving as data stewards in the national data ecosystem. The crisis commission of the Government of the Republic issued an order to Statistics Estonia for the preparation of analytical output using anonymous data from electronic communications, with the purpose to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The goal is to launch the project this week.

Statistics Estonia and all other European Union statistical authorities, forming the European Statistical System partnership, are responsible for the development, production and dissemination of European statistics. Compliance with the European Statistics Code of Practice is monitored though peer reviews. The next peer review in Estonia takes place on 6–10 September 2021.

Following the peer review of Statistics Estonia last month, the peer review team has given first recommendations to Statistics Estonia. The feedback highlighted strong statistical legislation in Estonia, the agency’s role in data governance and consistent work to improve the quality of databases and questionnaires.

The earnings application, first published more than a year ago, was upgraded by Statistics Estonia together with the Commissioner for Equal Opportunities, University of Tartu, Tallinn University of Technology and the Social Insurance Board. More occupational groups, comparison of males’ and females’ monthly earnings, and earnings and pension projections were added to the application.
