The economic results of Estonian transport enterprises improved last year
According to preliminary data, the loss of transport enterprises was 78 million euros (1.2 billion kroons) in 2010. However, the loss was much smaller than a year earlier. The net sales of transport enterprises were 1.7 billion euros (27 billion kroons), which was 16% bigger than in 2009. The sales of carriage of goods rendered over a half and the sales of carriage of passengers a fifth of net sales. The sales of carriage of goods increased by a fifth and the sales of carriage of passengers by a tenth compared to the previous year. In 2010, subsidies for passenger transport comprised nearly 85 million euros (1.3 billion kroons), which was 4% less than a year earlier.
In 2010, transport enterprises carried around 79 million tonnes of goods or 17% more than a year earlier. The freight turnover was 14.5 billion tonne-kilometres. The increase in freight turnover was mainly influenced by the sea and railway transport, where it increased by 62% and 12%, respectively. The freight turnover of road transport enterprises decreased by 5%. International transport covered 85% of the total freight turnover and increased by a tenth during the year. In domestic traffic, the freight turnover increased by 1%.
The number of passengers carried by Estonian transport enterprises was nearly 174 million, most of them were carried in domestic traffic. Passenger transport decreased by 8% compared to the previous year. Urban transport (i.e. buses, trams and trolleybuses) was used by almost 134 million passengers, which was 11% less than a year earlier. The number of passengers in other domestic road transport (excl. urban transport) increased by 4%, but decreased in sea and railway traffic by 3% and 2%, respectively. The number of passengers on domestic flights increased by 15%, but amounted to only 27,000 passengers. The number of passengers in international traffic was about 7.4 million, thereby sea transport gave nearly 80% of this number. The number of passengers in international traffic was 5% bigger than a year earlier. The passenger traffic volume of transport enterprises increased 2% compared to the previous year and in international passenger traffic the increase was 11%.
Freight turnover is the volume of work done in the transport of goods. It is measured in tonne-kilometres. One tonne-kilometre (ton-km) is the transport of one tonne of goods one kilometre away.
