According to Statistics Estonia, in March 2022, Estonia’s exports of goods increased by 35% and imports by 31% compared to March 2021. Compared to the first quarter of last year, exports grew by 30% and imports by 34%. In March and in the first quarter as a whole, trade was primarily boosted by the increased exports and imports of mineral fuels and electricity.

Jane Leppmets, foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that there was a marked decline in trade in goods in the first quarter of 2024, as exports were down by 16% and imports by 11%. “In the third quarter, imports were unchanged and there was a slight uptrend in exports. The positive trend was even more noticeable in the fourth quarter, with exports increasing by 6% and imports by 7%,” explained Leppmets. According to the first estimates of Statistics Estonia, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Estonia decreased by 16.1% in the 2nd quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter in the previous year. The GDP decreased successively for six quarters.

The share of goods of Estonian origin in total exports was also up from October last year, accounting for 66% in October 2024. According to Statistics Estonia, in July 2024, Estonia’s exports of goods increased by 5% and imports by 1% compared with July 2023. Exports of goods amounted to over €1.3 billion and imports to nearly €1.7 billion at current prices. The trade deficit was €321 million, which is €59 million less than in July last year.
