Census data show that 58% of the population was employed at the end of 2021, which is 6 percentage points more than 10 years ago. The increase is mainly due to persons of retirement age, but also slightly to the unemployed and students.

The first population and housing census in re-independent Estonia was carried out from 31 March to 9 April in 2000. The Census was prepared and conducted according to the recommendations of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat), which guarantee that the census data are internationally comparable. According to Statistics Estonia, in September, 212,000 domestic and foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments of Estonia, which was 15% more than in September a year ago. Compared to September of the previous year, the number of tourists from Russia and the United Kingdom increased the most.
