Census results show that 243 different mother tongues are spoken in Estonia. Estonian is spoken as a mother tongue by 67% and as a foreign language by 17% of the population. Therefore, a total of 84% of the population speaks Estonian.

Today, on 14 January, the Office of the Chancellor of Justice holds a seminar to present Statistics Estonia’s publication “Child Well-Being”. The publication covers all the main aspects of child well-being and gives an overview of child well-being in Estonia.

Births and deaths are a normal part of life. They also have an impact on the number of population of a country. Around a half of deaths in Estonia are caused by diseases of the circulatory system, followed by cancers. The number of deaths caused by cancers gradually increases with age. The causes of death are very different by age. Almost a half of the deaths of children and young people are a result of accidents. Deaths caused by accidents decrease with age. The data on the deaths of Estonian inhabitants help to predict population change and implement measures to prevent early deaths.

More than 1,600 people participated in the census rehearsal

At the end of last year and beginning of this year, Statistics Estonia carried out the main rehearsal of the Population and Housing Census. 843 persons living at 422 addresses responded to the test survey online. Interviewers collected responses from 785 persons living at 410 addresses. The test survey response rate was 87.5% and the received feedback was generally positive.

Survey: most people are willing to update their register data, but only a few have done it

86% of Estonian people are willing to review and update their personal information in the population register and in the register of buildings before the population census begins at the end of this year. Still, only 16% of the population, on average, have logged into these registers over the last year, as revealed by the survey carried out by Kantar Emor.

Among other things, the results of the survey revealed that both women and men suffer physical, psychological, and sexual violence most often in couple relationships.

According to Statistics Estonia, there were nearly 2.5 million museum visits in Estonia in 2022. Museum attendance has increased compared with the previous years but is still below the pre-pandemic level.

Prevention activities should have sufficient impact to avoid crimes and conflicts as much as possible. It is necessary to educate youth from early on, teach them rules of behaviour and social norms as well as responsibility in traffic. Fire safety awareness is required to avoid fatal mistakes. Justice and security statistics reflect the functioning of the Estonian legal system, number of crimes and rescue service
