According to Statistics Estonia, in August, Estonia’s exports of goods amounted to 1.5 billion and imports to 1.8 billion euros. Compared with the same month in 2022, exports of goods decreased by 22% and imports by 19% at current prices. The trade deficit in in August was 293 million euros, which is 7 million euros less than a year earlier.

Jane Leppmets, foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, in July, exports of goods grew primarily due to re-exports, i.e., the re-exports of previously imported goods increased by 26%. “The re-exports of mineral products (incl. natural gas) and transport equipment rose the most,” the analyst added. Exports of goods of Estonian origin fell by 1%. Goods of Estonian origin accounted for 59% of total exports in July, and their share decreased by six percentage points year on year. According to the guidelines of the Government of the Republic, Statistics Estonia is starting negotiations with mobile network operators to resume mobility analysis that was conducted last spring. The goal of the planned mobility analysis is to help evaluate the impact of adopted measures on the movement of people, direct communication and surveillance resources in Estonian regions and assess change in the risk of infection. Statistics Estonia used the same methodology for conducting mobility analysis during the emergency situation in spring 2020.

Data from the register-based population and housing census of 2021 reveal that 72.5% of Estonia’s population is made up of native people, i.e. persons with at least one parent and grandparent born in Estonia. At the time of the previous census, the share of the native populace was 75.3%, which means that the proportion of natives in the population has decreased by 2.8 percentage points, while the share of the foreign-origin population who consider themselves ethnic Estonians has increased.

There is exactly one week left until the end of the Population and Housing Census, as data collection continues with phone interviews. Due to the epidemic, there will be no home visits during this census. But enumerators are visiting the addresses included in the mandatory random sample to post notes that ask residents to make contact.

The first results show that the mobility of people has decreased as a result of the stricter restrictions introduced on 11 March and resembles that of the emergency situation period of last year.
