Estonia’s exports of services were boosted by trade with Finland

According to Statistics Estonia and Eesti Pank, in the first quarter of 2022, Estonia’s exports of services grew by 22% while imports of services fell by 10% year on year. In the first quarter of this year, Estonia’s exports of services totalled 2 billion euros and imports of services 1.5 billion euros.

Retail trade turnover has been falling for 18 months

Lauri Veski, team lead of consumer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that the rise in the consumer price index in January, both compared to December and the same month last year, was mainly due to food products, beverages, and motor vehicle tax. “On the other hand, the index was driven down by the sales on clothing in January and by international flights and holiday trips,” added Veski. Among food products, the biggest increases compared with December 2024 were registered in the prices of fish (31%), whole milk (12%) and fresh vegetables (7%)

Production of industrial enterprises down by 5.7% in March

According to Statistics Estonia, in March 2024, the total production of industrial enterprises fell by 5.7% compared with March last year. Among the three main sectors, output increased slightly in mining (by 0.4%), but decreased by 6.5% in manufacturing and by 4.4% in electricity production.

Number of people living in absolute poverty rose by two and a half times

According to Statistics Estonia, 22.5% of Estonia’s population lived at risk of poverty and 3.5% in absolute poverty in 2022. Compared with 2021, the share of people living at risk of poverty decreased by 0.3 percentage points and the share of people living in absolute poverty increased by 2.1 percentage points.

Construction prices rose by 1.6% in 2024

Ülo Paulus, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the increase in the construction price index in 2024, compared with the average of 2023, was primarily due to wage growth, which accounted for 65% of the total index rise. “In 2024, the construction price index rose by 1.6%.
