Jane Leppmets, foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the most significant changes in April concerned extra-EU trade. “Exports to EU countries were up by 8% and imports from the EU fell by 1%. In trade with non-EU countries, exports declined by 10% while imports grew by 16%. Year on year, there were decreased exports from Estonia to the United States, Russia and Singapore, and increased imports from Turkey and Switzerland,” explained Leppmets. According to Statistics Estonia, in May 189,000 tourists stayed in accommodation establishments of Estonia, which was 16% less than in the same month of previous year. The average cost of a guest night has fallen down to the level of 2003.

According to Statistics Estonia, on the basis of the first estimates of 2010 Agricultural Census the number of agricultural holdings has decreased almost three times as compared to the last, 2001 Agricultural Census. At the same time the agricultural area has increased 8%. It shows that agricultural activity is concentrating more and more into larger holdings.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2011 compared to the previous year, the electricity production from renewable sources has increased by 13%. During the last five years the share of electricity generated from oil shale has decreased by nearly a tenth. At the same time the electricity production from renewable sources has increased eight times.

According to Statistics Estonia, in Viimsi rural municipality and Saue city, only 6% of residents lived in relative poverty in 2011, while the share of the relatively poor was over 40% in Kallaste city and in Alatskivi and Peipsiääre rural municipalities. Among local governments, at-risk-of-poverty rate was the highest in remote areas near the border and the lowest in the local governments of Harju county.

Today, 8th of July, the Government of the Republic approved the regulation, which allows Statistics Estonia during a two-year transition period to ask economic units the data already submitted to the Business Register in their annual reports.
