Coronavirus and the ensuing economic crisis have affected the labour market also in Estonia. Since April, Statistics Estonia is publishing short-term statistics on changes in the labour market. Interactive charts give an overview of the current labour market situation on the basis of weekly data from the employment register. The charts show weekly changes in the number of employment relationships: how many were started, suspended or terminated. According to Statistics Estonia, in the first quarter of 2020, the labour force participation rate in Estonia was 71.7%, the employment rate was 68.1%, and the unemployment rate was 5%. These indicators do not yet reflect the negative impact of the emergency situation on the Estonian labour market.

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2020, the total production value of Estonian construction enterprises in Estonia and abroad was 3 billion euros. The construction volume decreased by 6% year on year. Considering only the Estonian construction market, the decrease in construction volume was 3%.

There were again fewer births than deaths, with population figure boosted by immigration

According to the revised data of Statistics Estonia, on 1 January 2021, the population of Estonia was 1,330,068, which is 1,179 persons more than the year before*. Last year, the population figure decreased by 2,602 persons due to negative natural increase but increased by 3,782 persons as a result of positive net migration.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2020, the labour force participation rate was 71.6%, the employment rate was 66.7%, and the unemployment rate was 6.8%. There were 47,900 unemployed persons, which is 16,600 more than in 2019.
