After a few years of stagnation, 2016 can be considered rather successful for enterprises – the turnover, investments as well as the number of active enterprises increased by 4%. According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, on 1 January 2024, the population of Estonia was 1,366,491, which is 607 persons more than at the same time a year ago. In 2023, there were 10,721 births and 15,832 deaths in Estonia. Based on the data on registered migration, 20,209 persons immigrated to Estonia and 14,491 persons emigrated from Estonia. Compared with a year earlier, the number of births, deaths and immigrants has fallen, while the number of emigrants has risen.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the fourth quarter of 2022, there were 11,289 job vacancies in the enterprises, institutions and organisations of Estonia. This is 1.7% more than in the same quarter of 2021. Fewer than 7,000 persons left their job at the initiative of the employer.

Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, pointed out that the turnover volume of retail trade enterprises, which had been growing since December last year, began to decline in August. “The drop in the volume of turnover was influenced by stores selling manufactured goods as well as grocery stores. Piret Pukk, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that nearly 1.95 million foreign and 1.74 million domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in 2025. “Compared with 2024, there were 5% more foreign tourists and 1% fewer domestic tourists,” she added. “When we compare tourist numbers with those in the pre-pandemic record year 2019, the number of accommodated domestic tourists was 13% higher last year, while the number of foreign tourists was 13% lower,” noted Pukk. Among food products, the biggest rise occurred in the prices of chocolate (31.5%), coffee (31%), poultry (15.2%) and fresh fruits and berries (12.7%).
