Construction volume took a downturn in the second quarter
According to Statistics Estonia, in the second quarter of 2022, the total production value of Estonian construction enterprises in Estonia and abroad decreased by 1.4% year on year at constant prices. Considering only the Estonian construction market, the construction volume fell by 1.8%.
The production value of Estonian construction enterprises totalled 1,079 million euros. Building construction accounted for 697 million euros and civil engineering for 382 million euros. Compared to the second quarter of 2021, the volume of building construction decreased by 8% and the volume of civil engineering works (roads, bridges, port facilities, pipelines, communication and electricity lines, sports fields, etc.) increased by 14%.
Merike Sinisaar, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the construction market is still affected by the rapid rise in construction costs. “The domestic construction market was primarily influenced by the decreased volume of building construction. There was a fall in both new building construction and building repair and reconstruction works. The increased volume of civil engineering was primarily due to repair and reconstruction works, but there was also a small growth in new civil engineering production,” added Sinisaar.
The construction volume of Estonian construction enterprises in foreign countries increased by 7% compared to the second quarter of 2021. There was a rise in both building construction and civil engineering works carried out abroad. Construction in foreign countries accounted for 5% of the total construction volume – this share was 4% the year before.
In the first six months of 2022, the construction volume increased by 5% year on year. The buoyant first quarter ensured a positive overall result for building construction (up by 3%). The volume of civil engineering increased by a tenth year on year.
Statistics Estonia collects and analyses data to produce the quarterly economic indicators of enterprises. The statistical activity is commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in order to understand how the Estonian economy is doing.
