Food prices had the biggest impact on the consumer price index in January
The increase in the consumer price index in January was 0.8% compared with December 2022 and 18.6% compared with January 2022. Goods were 19.0% and services 17.8% more expensive than in January last year.
Viktoria Trasanov, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared with January 2022, the consumer price index was influenced the most by price increases of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which accounted for a third of the total rise. Among food products, the biggest increases occurred in the prices of sugar (97.2%), flour and cereals (62.1%), sauces (57.1%), and eggs (56.3%). Price changes related to housing accounted for nearly a quarter of the total increase. Transport accounted for a tenth of the rise in the index. Petrol was 10.1% and diesel fuel 25,8% more expensive.
Compared with December 2022, the consumer price index in January was influenced the most by the rising prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which accounted for more than 60% of the total increase, and by sales on clothing and footwear.
As the consumption patterns of the population and prices continuously change, Statistics Estonia updates the weights system of the consumer price index and the representative goods every year. Starting from the January index, the base prices used for calculations are the prices of December 2022. To ensure comparability with previous periods, the consumer price index will continue to be published on the base 1997 = 100.
In addition to the change in the consumer price index by commodity groups, the table for January 2023 includes the expenditure structure, i.e. the weights of commodity groups, used in 2022 as well as the expenditure structure used since the January 2023 index.
