According to Statistics Estonia's preliminary estimate, gross domestic product (GDP) continued to decline in the fourth quarter of 2023. GDP fell by approximately 3% compared with the fourth quarter of 2022.

According to Statistics Estonia and Eesti Pank, in the first quarter of 2024, Estonia’s exports of services grew by 2%, while imports were unchanged from the same period last year. Sales of services to non-residents totalled €2.8 billion and purchases of services from non-residents amounted to €2.2 billion at current prices. According to Statistics Estonia, exports of goods in 2023 decreased by 16% and imports by 17% compared with the year before. Jane Leppmets, foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that exports of goods of Estonian origin increased by 6% in November, while re-exports decreased by 2%. “The share of goods of Estonian origin in total exports was up by two percentage points in November, accounting for 66%. The groups of goods of Estonian origin with the largest exports in November were electrical equipment and wood and articles of wood,” Leppmets noted. According to Statistics Estonia, in November 2023, Estonia’s exports of goods amounted to 1.5 billion and imports to 1.7 billion euros. Compared with November 2022, exports of goods decreased by 12% and imports by 19% at current prices. The trade deficit in November was 200 million euros, which is 198 million euros less than a year earlier.

According to Statistics Estonia, in April 2022, Estonia’s exports of goods increased by 4% and imports by 31% compared to April 2021. Faster growth in imports contributed significantly to the increase of trade deficit, which reached 542 million euros in April.

Compared with the same month in 2022, exports of goods decreased by 22% and imports by 19% at current prices. The trade deficit in in August was 293 million euros, which is 7 million euros less than a year earlier.

In the first quarter of this year, Estonia’s exports of services totalled 2 billion euros and imports of services 1.5 billion euros.
