According to the 2021 census, an estimated one third of the population have a long-term illness or health problem. This is 2 percentage points more than in the previous census in 2011. 28% of the population are limited in their daily activities because of a health problem.

Statistics Estonia has begun preparations for conducting the register-based Population and Housing Census (REGREL) of 2020. Next year’s Census will be the last where the entire population is interviewed.

According to the revised data of Statistics Estonia, 1,315,944 persons lived in Estonia on 1 January 2016 – 2,673 persons more than at the same time a year earlier. The population figure decreased by 1,336 persons due to negative natural increase, but increased by 2,410 as a result of positive net migration. The increase in the population figure was also influenced by changes in the calculation methodology, resulting in 1,599 persons being added to the population.

Johanna Linda Pihlak, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that retail trade volume, which had grown by 7% in March year on year, did not grow as fast in April. “In April, the increase in the volume of retail trade turnover was influenced by enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel and by stores selling manufactured goods,” added Pihlak. Riin Kadarik, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that manufacturing output continued to decline in April, similarly to March and February. “The main reason for this was the 8% decrease in the manufacture of food products. In this activity, there has been a year-on-year decline in output for fourth months in a row. It is likely that the conflict in the Middle East has started to affect supply chains, and inflation also continues to influence food manufacturing,” added Kadarik. Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that 95,000 foreign and 110,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in January 2025. Year on year, the number of domestic tourists fell, as it did in several months in 2024. According to Statistics Estonia, the Dwelling Price Index increased by 5.5% in 2017 compared to the average of 2016. In the annual comparison, the prices of apartments increased by 5.4% and the prices of houses by 5.8%.

Robert Müürsepp, the National Accounts Service Manager at Statistics Estonia, said that GDP growth was last over 2% in the first quarter of 2022. “GDP increased for the fourth quarter in a row,” he said. “In the case of most economic activities, their contribution to GDP in the first quarter was positive, although mostly modest,” added Müürsepp. He said that, for the third consecutive quarter, manufacturing was the biggest driver of economic growth as its value added was up by 7%.
