Statistics Estonia is making preparations for Population and Housing Census 2021. In contrast to previous censuses, this time the majority of the required data will be obtained from state databases. People will answer only to the questions for which there are no data available in any of the databases.

Lauri Veski, team lead of consumer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that preliminary data from the harmonised index of consumer prices indicate that prices have risen across almost all categories of goods and services compared with March 2024. “Clothing and footwear are again the only exception, as their prices were down by 3.6%,” noted Veski. At the end of the year, on 28 December, the Population and Housing Census, conducted every ten years, starts in Estonia. Everyone living in Estonia is invited to complete an online questionnaire for the census by 22 January 2022. In February, census takers will call or visit the people for whom filling in the questionnaire is mandatory.

At the end of 2024, there were 2.4 million poultry in Estonia. 97% of these were hens and cocks, and the remaining 78,200 were other poultry. Ege Kirs, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that egg production has started to increase again in recent years. “Last year, the poultry laid a total of 11,800 tonnes of eggs. The bulk of egg production comes from a few large farms, which are also the main contributors to production growth and decline,” Kirs noted. 169,300 foreign and 134,900 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in May. Similarly to May last year, the bigger share of accommodated guests – 56% – were foreign tourists and 44% were domestic tourists. Today, President Kersti Kaljulaid visited Statistics Estonia to learn about the opportunities to use big data and experimental statistics to produce official statistics and improve the physical and social environment of Estonian people.

Robert Müürsepp, team lead of national accounts at Statistics Estonia, said that the preliminary estimate shows signs of improvement in the Estonian economy in the fourth quarter of last year. “There was no more major recession, as the seasonally and working-day adjusted GDP remained unchanged from the third quarter of 2024.
