Monday, 28 February, marked the end of the second stage of the Population and Housing Census where data were collected from people living at the addresses included in the mandatory sample. The survey component of the census has ended, but data collection from registers continues until July, to ensure that all residents of Estonia are counted.

The Population and Housing Census, which started at the end of last year, continues on a smaller scale in February. Throughout the month, enumerators are contacting the people who did not respond to the e-census but live at mandatory sample addresses.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2021, the Dwelling Price Index increased by 15.1% compared to the average of 2020.

According to Statistics Estonia, in October, the consumer price index fell by 0.4% compared with September and rose by 4.9% compared with October 2022. Goods were 3.7% and services 7.0% more expensive than in October last year.

The producer price index of industrial output, which expresses changes in the producer prices of industrial goods manufactured in Estonia for the domestic market and for export, increased by 0.4% in July 2024 compared with June and by 0.8% compared with July last year.

According to Statistics Estonia's data, Estonian power plants produced 5,686 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity and 4,323 GWh of heat in 2023. Compared with 2022, electricity production was down by 37% and heat production by 15%.

Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that while turnover volume fell by 4% in September year on year, the decline was slightly slower in October. “The fall in the volume of retail trade turnover in October was mainly due to grocery stores, as their turnover volume decreased by 4% year on year. However, the turnover volume of stores selling manufactured goods, which had been in decline for over two years, started to rise again in October and was up by 3% year on year,” noted Pihlak. Piret Pukk, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that Estonian residents have been travelling more in recent years but are still not making as many trips as before the pandemic, especially as concerns outbound trips. “Last year, the number of domestic trips was again over two times bigger than the number of outbound trips. In 2019, Estonian residents made 1.7 million overnight outbound trips and 3.5 million overnight domestic trips. In 2024, the number of trips abroad was 9% smaller than in 2019, while the number of domestic trips was almost back at the pre-pandemic level,” said Pukk

According to Statistics Estonia, in November, the consumer price index remained at the same level as in October 2023 and increased by 4.0% compared with November 2022. Goods were 2.6% and services 6.5% more expensive than in November last year.

Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that 119,000 foreign and 128,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in November 2024. The number of domestic tourists, which was in decline for most months in 2024 year on year, took an upturn in October 2024 and continued this trend in November. Still, the number of tourists remained 6% smaller than in November of 2019, the pre-pandemic record year. “Compared with November 2019, there were 12,000 more domestic tourists accommodated, while the number of foreign tourists was lower by 27,000 in November 2024,” added Laurmaa
