The international Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC), which aims to collect data on people’s everyday competencies such as literacy, numeracy, information-seeking, use of computers and information technology, as well as their education and work experience, begins today. This is the second time that Estonia has participated in the survey.

6. Clean Water and Sanitation

The focus of the global goal “Clean Water and Sanitation” is the need to ensure that people have clean drinking water, sanitation and hygiene conditions. Lack of quality and adequate water supply and sanitation affects reaching other global goals such as healthcare, promoting education and reducing poverty. The 2030 Agenda sets the target to improve water and sanitation systems to ensure access to quality drinking water and adequate wastewater treatment. Number of people living in absolute poverty rose by two and a half times

According to Statistics Estonia, 22.5% of Estonia’s population lived at risk of poverty and 3.5% in absolute poverty in 2022. Compared with 2021, the share of people living at risk of poverty decreased by 0.3 percentage points and the share of people living in absolute poverty increased by 2.1 percentage points.

Industrial production up 0.8% in August

According to Statistics Estonia, in August, the total production of industrial enterprises increased 0.8% at constant prices compared with August 2021. Output rose in two of the three sectors – up 10.2% in electricity production and as much as 121.4% in mining – but fell 3.7% in manufacturing.

At-risk-of-poverty rate is highest among the elderly, while among families with children it is highest for single parents (corrected on 09.12.2022)

Population census project to be headed by Liina Osila
